What Does The Term 'Plus Size' Actually Mean?

On our website we refer on a regular basis to plus size lingerie, well, what does the term ‘Plus Size’ actually mean?

In the UK this term refers to a dress size that is larger than the typical standard sizes which are 10 to 18. So broadly speaking ‘plus size’ does start at UK dress size 18 or maybe even 20. However, all of these terms, dreamt up by the fashion industry for their own purpose, are pretty general and should be taken with a large pinch of salt!

In today’s world of body positivity and inclusiveness there is less and less need for labels like this. The most important thing for a woman (or man!) to appreciate when buying clothes or underwear is to wear garments that suit your personal body shape and your individual style.

Consequently, items such as Plus Size Bodysuits which in the past might have been something only your Granny would wear are now well made and stylish and can also be incredibly sexy!

History

The phrase ‘plus size’ only appeared as late as the 20th century as the fashion industry began to offer garments to a much wider variety of body shapes and sizes. At this stage the phrase was often used to refer to overweight or very large women and not in a very complimentary way!

But in the 21st century the meaning of the phrase ‘plus size’ has come to be far more inclusive and complimentary. The fashion industry recognised that the majority of women were in fact ‘plus size’ and consequently the choice and variety of clothing has became much wider.

Large Cup Bra’s for example, say F, G and H and more suddenly became the norm with a much wider choice available than in previous times.

Definition

So, whilst in the UK plus size usually means dress size 18 and upwards, it’s important to be aware that the term can actually vary by manufacturer and will certainly change when considering different styles of clothing, sleepwear, swimwear and lingerie. As a rule of thumb, when buying online, it’s always advisable to check the individual manufacturer’s own size chart.

Today

In the past for many women the term ‘plus size’ felt discriminatory as if there was a ‘normal’ size and there was a ‘plus size’. However, perceptions really have changed today as firstly, manufacturers have stopped treating plus size as an afterthought and now cater for them with specific offerings. And secondly women themselves have become far more confident in their own bodies and have refused to accept being marginalised by the fashion industry.

The consequence of this is that plus size women are now actively embraced and pursued by the industry. Fashion shows, magazines, TV programmes as well as clothing and underwear are all now regularly targeting plus size women. Not as a secondary consideration but as a significant sector of the women’s fashion industry.

This table is an approximate guide when buying 'plus size lingerie' or clothing but when purchasing online you should always refer to that manufacturer’s size guide.
