A really good quality corset, such as those from Shirley of Hollywood or Dominique will also tend to be fully boned in order to cinch you in at the waist and therefore should give you a great hourglass shape but still be comfortable enough to wear for a lengthy period.
Because of this in the past a corset would be more functional than attractive. However that is not the case today as corsets come in many and varied colours and styles.
By its very nature a corset is a garment designed to give you shape and support and therefore is usually made of jacquard or satin. But this also means that both leather and PVC make great corsets as those materials tend to be very supportive and shaping.
This means that a strapless corset is absolutely ideal to be worn under an off the shoulder or strapless wedding dress.
A basque on the other hand whilst being similar to a corset is slightly different in that it usually fastens at the front. A corset of course tends to fasten at the back, usually with a lace up but also sometimes with a hook and eye closure. More importantly a basque generally will not have such strong boning, so whilst it will give you some shape the support and control that it provides will not be as much as that offered by a corset.
So a strapless basque is very good for a special occasion or evening out perhaps but is maybe not the best choice if you are looking for support all day long.
